Dear Stuart,
I am excited to share with you an update and an invitation to celebrate the opening of the second edition of FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art. Prem Krishnamurthy, our FRONT 2022 Artistic Director, has assembled a brilliant exhibition sprawling across 30 venues in Northeast Ohio and featuring a dazzling array of over 100 artists, including art stars like Julie Mehretu, Firelei Baez, Renée Green, Yoshitomo Nara, Jacolby Satterwhite.
Anticipation is high, and the press is calling FRONT one of the must-see art events of the year, along with documenta and the Venice Bienalle.
The title of FRONT 2022, Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows is inspired by a couplet by Langston Hughes, . . .
Our preview days are July 14 and 15, and we would be delighted to have you join artists and art lovers from across the country to share a packed calendar of events and programming. . . .
Laura and I would be pleased to have you as our guests for an open house brunch at our home from 10:00 to 12:00 on July 15 and 16. . . .
Of course, FRONT runs through October 2, and we would love to see you any time this Summer. I would love to hear your thoughts and impressions.
With warm regards,
Fred Bidwell
Executive Director
I am grateful that Fred Bidwell emailed me an invitation to attend the 2022 FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art (@FrontTriennial #FrontArt2022) preview events. It was great to learn more about, and get an advanced look at some of the venues before “Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows” opened to the public on July 16, 2022. It runs through October 2, 2022.
As background, I put together both "Preview Exhibition" and "Personal Prequel" blog posts, which cover my interests and activities relating to FRONT International between the 2018 events and the start of the 2022:
-
Blog Date: October 14, 2021 - FRONT 2022 Preview Exhibition: Grand Prototypes, Humble Tools
-
Blog Date: July 13, 2022 - Personal Prequel: 2022 FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art

The scope of this second FRONT International is so large that the preview barely gave a nibble of the full banquet of northeast Ohio art that is now available for exploration. As I prepared this blog post, I learned more and more, but also realized that there still is much more to learn. In 2018, my wife and co-blogger, Julie, enjoyed visiting and blogging about many of the venues we visited, and we look forward to exploring the new art at the 2022 venues.
This blog post includes both the two days of preview events and the kickoff block party, plus additional information:

Provenance Café and Importance of Accessibility to FRONT Venues
I was glad to be able to have both my wife and my dad join me for the FRONT Press Conference and lunch at the museum's Provenance Café. My dad enjoyed the excitement of the press conference, and I hope to visit some of the FRONT International venues with him.
Here are links with information about the dining experience at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

My dad has recently moved up to the Cleveland area so that my sister and I can look after his care. If you follow me on Twitter, you will see that I often take him to the Cleveland Museum of Art and other museums and local parks. It is great how all the museums and also the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Boston Mill Visitor Center provide wheelchairs. Here is the FRONT International Accessibility Statement, which will have a positive impact as I take my dad to visit the venues:

I took my dad to @ClevelandArt today so he could see the @FrontTriennial #FrontArt2022 Press Conference & have a @ProvenanceAtCMA Café lunch in the beautiful atrium at the #museum.

Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows
FRONT International 2022: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary ArtIn partnership with FRONT International, the Cleveland Institute of Art will mount four unique solo exhibition projects by noteworthy artists—Jacolby Satterwhite, Dexter Davis, Loraine Lynn and Alexandra Noel—as a part of Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows, the 2022 FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art. . . . Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows will be on view from July 16 to October 2 at venues across Northeast Ohio.
As I entered the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) building, I heard someone call out "Stuart, is that you?" The voice I heard was that of CIA Director of College Communications and External Relations Mike Butz, who I follow on Twitter. It was great to talk to him in person about a tour I took of the CIA video lab many years ago with members of the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group, and about the current FRONT International exhibition.
In addition to FRONT International, Mike Butz told me about the current CAN Triennial: You Are Here (https://CANtriennial.org/) exhibition, which is happening at several Cleveland area venues, including the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA). Be sure to follow @CleInstituteArt on Twitter to watch for details about a special CIA reception from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, July 29, 2022. This reception will precede the PechaKucha Night Cleveland at moCa Cleveland. Since I greatly enjoy both Cleveland and Akron PechaKucha Nights, I have written 14 blog posts about them (click here to view), and in 2016, I was asked to do a special PechaKucha talk to past PechaKucha Night Cleveland presenters.
Here are the details about the reception, followed by tweets about both the CIA reception and PechaKucha Night Cleveland that I would encourage you to share with others by retweeting:
https://www.cia.edu/events/2022/07/you-are-here-the-way-we-transcend
You Are Here: The Way We Transcend
CAN Triennial 2022: You Are HereCAN Triennial 2022: You Are Here is a multi-venue exhibition organized in collaboration with an intergenerational, diverse team of curators from a range of institutional affiliations.
The University Circle portion of the CAN Triennial explores You Are Here as seen through the lens of identity, environment and journey. In other words, it is about who we are, how place impacts our sense of self, and how where we are is a function of how we got here.
You Are Here: The Way We Transcend will be on view from July 8 through August 31 in the Ann and Norman Roulet Student + Alumni Gallery. A reception will be held from 6 to 8pm Friday, July 29, and the exhibition will feature work by Cathie Bleck, Melissa English Campbell, Jill Yanik Eisert, Robin Haller and Seneca Kuchar. Eisert and Kuchar are 2008 and 2021 CIA alumni, respectively. . . . Also on view in University Circle will be You Are Here: Understanding the Space We Fill at the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve and You Are Here: Look How Far We’ve Come at The Sculpture Center.

As I was looking for some information for this blog post about CIA Director of College Communications and External Relations Mike Butz, I found an article that he wrote about the recent passing of Toby Devan Lewis. Since she was a well known supporter of contemporary art in Northeast Ohio, I thought it was appropriate to include tributes to her work. Whenever I walk through Toby's Plaza on my way to moCa Cleveland, I remember how she helped me many years ago with a fundraising event featuring artwork from Progressive Corporation. I had not heard about her April 29, 2022, passing, since I was on a backpacking trip on the Continental Divide Trail when @CleInstituteArt shared on Twitter about her lifelong contribution to our local art community.
My wife and I wrote about Toby Devan Lewis's support of both moCa Cleveland and the Cleveland Museum of Art in our University Tour blog post:

https://www.mocacleveland.org/building
moCa's Building
. . . designed to inspire dialog centered on creativity. It does so while reflecting a cosmopolitan area of Cleveland and those who bring it to life.
moCa's physical structure is nearly 34,000-square-foot . . .
The four-story building, which anchors the Uptown district, rises 60 feet from a hexagonal base to a square top, where the primary exhibition space is situated. All four floors contain areas for either exhibitions or public programs.
. . . On the top floor, the 6,000-square-foot gallery space has no fixed dividing walls, allowing for various configurations. This floor also contains a gallery designed for new media work and the Dick and Doreen Cahoon Lounge, which overlooks Toby's Plaza and Uptown.
After a quick walk through all the exhibitions in this unique four-story building, I joined others for appetizers and drinks outside in Toby's Plaza. I plan to come back with Julie and take the time to truly look at all the exhibitions. Tonight, I just wanted to get a sample taste -- meeting people was the priority of the evening.
I joined others in conversation at a stand-up table, and somehow found myself joining with family members and friends of Renée Green, who were celebrating her success this evening. It was fun hearing how proud they were of her creative work that encompasses the entire gallery space at moCa Cleveland!
Renée Green soon joined us at the table, and later, after her presentation to the attendees, I talked to her and took her photo.
https://www.mocacleveland.org/reneegreen-contact
Renée Green: Contact
. . . For FRONT 2022, Cleveland-born artist Renée Green has conceived Contact, her first major exhibition in the city, which occupies all of moCa Cleveland’s public spaces and radiates out into the city with workshops and film screenings.
A contrapuntal exhibition, Contact weaves together Green’s own works–some newly commissioned by FRONT 2022–with a vast array of invited participants with whom she’s been in conversation through the years. . . . In addition to Green, Contact features the art, thinking, and voices of a diverse ensemble of artists and practitioners, including John Akomfrah, Marcel Broodthaers, Cinematic Migrations Workshop, Free Agent Media, Laura Serejo Genes, Lina Gopaul, Derrick Green, Index Literacy Program, Gabriel Kahan, David Lawson, New Humans, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Suneil Sanzgiri, Sense LA, Smoking Dogs Films, Jessica Sarah Rinland, Ian Soroka, Mika Tajima, and Pedro Zylbersztajn.
While at the reception, I also met Dennis Barrie, PhD, who is the Vice President of Experience Design at the Western Reserve Historical Society. I told him how my wife, Julie, and son, Kevin, were on the board of Euclid Beach Now, and thus were very active with the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel at his museum. Kevin is displaying his huge, vintage, amusement park memorabilia collection at the museum's Euclid Beach Days on July 23 and 24, 2022. (Click here to read my many blog posts about Euclid Beach Park.)
At the FRONT #VIP Preview Party by #Museum of Contemporary #Art #Cleveland we hear from @moCaCleveland Exec Dir Megan Lykins Reich.

I was approached by moCa Development Director Xinxin Guo near the end of the evening, and enjoyed a long talk about her work at the museum. We talked about how we have both used Raiser’s Edge fundraising software, and I told her about Cleveland GiveCamp Weekend 2022. (Click here to see my Cleveland GiveCamp blog posts and visit https://ClevelandGiveCamp.org/ to learn more about this opportunity for local nonprofits to receive FREE tech solutions.)
Xinxin offered to get me a copy of the still-in-development FRONT International booklet for the moCa Cleveland venue. The booklet will provide more details about the work of artist Renée Green, which now fills the museum.
At @FrontTriennial preview, @moCaCleveland dir of development introduced herself & offered to get me new FRONT booklet for MOCA. It is great when #museum staff are so helpful

Enjoyed talking with her about @Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge & @CleGiveCamp providing FREE tech to nonprofits https://t.co/oixVLxnIFh pic.twitter.com/AOF1l0nO5D
I ended the my evening at the FRONT VIP Preview Party by meeting moCa Cleveland Executive Director Megan Lykins Reich, and thanking her for the enjoyable event.
Thank you, @moCaCleveland, for the food & fun at your “FRONT #VIP Preview Party” for #Cleveland’s @FrontTriennial.

In addition to thanking Megan Lykins Reich, I also thanked the moCa Cleveland staff who were running the greeting and registration table as I left the building, and asked them about returning with my dad. I have been thinking for a while about bringing my dad to moCa Cleveland, but I was concerned that he would not be able to walk the distance from the parking area. The moCa Cleveland staff I talked to were extremely helpful in offering suggestions on how they would be willing to work with me. While writing this blog post, I called and confirmed that they do provide wheelchairs that visitors can use at no charge.
On June 7th, I gave a shout-out to @ClevelandArt for how their staff deserve extra praise

Friday, July 15, 2022 - Walking by CWRU Mandel School & Western Reserve Historical Society Grand Carousel

‘The Homeless’ sculpture finds a home at Mandel School
OCTOBER 16, 2018 FEATURED UNIVERSITY NEWSLate contemporary artist George Segal’s piece to serve as reminder of social work school’s commitment to build a more just world
. . . The bronze statue was erected and unveiled at the entrance of the university’s Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences . . .
Driving or walking by the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences building many times, I have seen "The Homeless" sculpture, but I have never stopped to look at it closely. After a day of FRONT International art, it seemed appropriate this evening to stop, look closer, and read the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) article about the sculpture: https://thedaily.case.edu/homeless-sculpture-finds-home-mandel-school/
When visiting the Case Western Reserve University campus, you can see the 'The Homeless' #sculpture in front of the @MandelSchool building.

This survey is meant for disenfranchised and non-voters only, people who are eligible to vote, but choose not to. You are either not registered at all, or you are registered but do not ever participate in elections.
Your responses will be used to determine the topics The Cleveland Observer will be writing about for our “None Of The Above” series on non-voters. We will write about the issues you provide to us.
I understand not voting is un-popular right now, but this survey was written by a non-voter, and I encourage you to be as open and honest as you wish.
Maybe it’s as simple as not voting because you have no transportation to get there. Maybe it’s more complicated than that, and you think the whole political system is broken. There are no rules regarding use of language or what you can say, I only ask that you be truthful and fact-based.

Komotus’ mission is to curate experiences that initiate and enrich deeper connection to oneself and community through heart opening ceremonies, breath workshops, and body movement.
After enjoying the acrobatic performance by Komotus, I talked to one of their members. She let me know that they soon will have a new website, but in the meantime, you can find them on Sundays at 6:00 pm at the Cleveland Metroparks Edgewater Park. I also found them on Facebook, and was able to message them for more details. See:

It is always good to talk to Emily Bacha, who is one of a great team of community leaders who organize PechaKucha Cleveland. (Click here to see read my many PechaKucha blog posts.) Seeing her, and meeting her husband, Dirk Bird, for the first time, reminded me of how much I missed meeting with people in person during these past recent years of isolation due to COVID-19.
When I think of Emily Bacha, I think of the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, whose good work I often see in my travels around northeast Ohio. Emily used to be the Western Reserve Land Conservancy's Director of Communications and Marketing. I was surprised to discover that she has already been the Vice President of Public Affairs at the Ohio Environmental Council for over three years.

"People are amazed by the size and breadth of the triennial, and that all of the Cleveland exhibits are free," says Janet Renner, director of marketing for FRONT.
FreshWater Cleveland does an excellent job of featuring FRONT International in these two articles:
