We put together this Niagara Falls blog post to share the photos and videos of our three-day trip on Monday, November 11, 2024, through Wednesday, November 13, 2024. The first two days, we explored Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. On the third day, we drove along the Niagara River exploring parks, first on the Canadian side and then on the United States side of the river.

It felt strange saying we were going to Canada the week after the United States election, but we had planned this trip out of the country before the turbulent election, and did share that we were coming back after three days.

We have gone to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, in the winter before, so we knew what to expect and had the proper warm clothing. We have memories from when we were first married of driving through a blizzard along the southern border of Lake Erie on our way to the Falls. This year, we had much more pleasant weather, except for some rain on the evening of the first day.

In recent years, we have only been visiting the Niagara Falls, New York, USA, side, so it was great to see what new attractions and improvements have been made by the Canadian Niagara Park System. In particular, we were amazed by the newly opened (in 2021) Niagara Parks Power Station and its tailrace tunnel, which opened in 2022.

We hope you enjoy our photos/videos, along with what we learned during our visit to Niagara Falls, Canada, and the Niagara River. Please watch all of our videos and all the embedded YouTube videos in full screen mode!! It is the only way to see the full beauty of the area.

Day One: Monday, November 11, 2024 - Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Journey Behind The Falls

To stand at the heart of Niagara, you’ll first need to descend 125 feet and explore 130-year-old tunnels through the bedrock, but you’ll feel the thunderous vibration of the Horseshoe Falls long before you see them.

The observation deck at the foot of this 13-storey-tall wonder will leave you breathless (and maybe a little bit wet), but don’t forget the viewing portals cut straight through the rock, offering a once-in-a-lifetime view of one-fifth of the world’s fresh water crashing down in front of you.

Explore the Storied Tunnels

After journeying deep into the bedrock, navigate fascinating tunnels that lead behind the Horseshoe Falls. You’ll find incredible cave-like portals that open behind the falling water, where you’ll see, hear and feel the power of the falls up-close at Journey Behind the Falls!

Lower Observation Deck

Make your way to the lower observation deck to see one of the world’s most beloved natural wonders from a perspective few have witnessed. Feel the power of nature’s force as you stand just feet away from the mighty Niagara Falls, surrounded by the ancient rock formations carved by centuries of relentless flow.

Journey Through Time

Journey Behind the Falls holds a rich history, dating back to 1832 when the first staircase was constructed down into the Niagara Gorge for visitors to enter what was then called the “Sheet of Falling Water” attraction. This history is celebrated and showcased throughout a refreshed queuing area featuring all-new exhibits.

Go on a journey through time, from the formation of the Falls to the first Indigenous inhabitants and the rise of Niagara Falls as a global tourism destination.

Journey Behind the Falls is a year-round attraction that offers a unique view of the Falls from below and behind.

Visitors descend 125 ft. by elevator, where a short tunnel gives access to two outdoor observation decks and two portals located directly behind the Falls. At Journey Behind the Falls, you`ll experience the awesome spectacle of one-fifth of the world's freshwater crashing down to the basin below. During summer daylight hours, over 2,800 cubic meters of water thunders over the brink every second, travelling 65 kilometers per hour!

Your Journey Behind the Falls visit will take 30 to 45 minutes and in the spring and summer months, you`ll receive a free souvenir biodegradable rain poncho as protection from the mist of the Falls. Elevators descend 125 feet through bedrock to tunnels that lead and to the Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal which is one-third of the way behind the massive sheet of water. Then you walk on to the Upper and Lower Observation Decks at the very foot of the Falls. Posters of information are a great resource of information about the history and evolution of the hallways you walk through. Journey Behind the Falls is an iconic Niagara Falls experience, make sure you take a waterproof camera.

We had a great first day in Niagara Falls, Canada! We ended up doing more than we planned for our first day. It was great to be able to go behind the falls, which we have not done in years.

Evening Two: Tuesday, November 12, 2024 - Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Niagara Falls Illumination Experience the dazzling lights on Niagara Falls
Every evening beginning at dusk, Niagara Falls is transformed into an incredible, multi-coloured water and light masterpiece.

Special lights are housed in the Illumination Tower, next to Queen Victoria Place; on the roof of Table Rock Centre, at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls; and deep in the Niagara Gorge, across from the American Falls. Together, these lights work to create a breathtaking view not to be missed. The falls are also lit in custom colours for short durations to mark significant dates in support of charitable causes. Special colour illuminations are provided courtesy of The Niagara Falls Illumination Board.

The New Falls Illumination
How do they light up Niagara Falls? In 2016, almost 20 years since the last major investment in falls lighting, the existing Xenon lights were replaced with new, energy-efficient LED lighting technology. These new lights provide more than twice the previous lighting levels, programmable lighting, and a wider spectrum of colour. The new lights also fill gaps to provide a more consistent lighting effect.

The ‘Illumination of the Falls’ has been financed and operated by The Niagara Falls Illumination Board since 1925.

The Best View of the Falls is on the Niagara SkyWheel
Soar 175-feet above Niagara Falls for the view of a lifetime! The Niagara SkyWheel gives riders a breathtaking panoramic view of this spectacular natural wonder from the vantage of climate controlled gondolas. Soak in the awe-inspiring scene year-round, day and night, in total comfort.

. . .

The Niagara SkyWheel’s fully enclosed gondolas are each equipped with heating and air conditioning for year-round comfort and enjoyment. The ride duration varies from eight (8) to twelve (12) minutes with spectacular aerial views for miles in every direction. Evening rides offer dazzling views of the glittering lights of Clifton Hill and the surrounding Niagara skyline.

On our second night in Niagara Falls, Canada, we enjoyed the great Niagara Parks holiday lights and the colorfully lit falls, and the fun atmosphere of Clifton Hill. After a "Hershey's Deluxe Hot Chocolate" at Hershey's Chocolate World, we ended our evening out with a ride on the Niagara SkyWheel. We noted that there were 42 heated gondolas on the SkyWheel. After our ride into the sky, we then walked back to our hotel to enjoy the hot tub. Our hotel, the Holiday Inn By The Falls, was decorated with Christmas trees that they had put up while we were out during the day. It was fun to see the holiday decorations!

NOTE: In 2021, we wrote a blog post about visiting Hershey’s Chocolate World in Pennsylvania, before Stuart went on a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail. Visiting this smaller version of Hershey’s Chocolate World in Niagara Falls brought back great memories of our 2021 Pennsylvania trip.

Day Three: Wednesday, November 13, 2024 - Niagara River - Canada and USA

We spent our third (and final) day in Canada, first heading north, driving along the route of the Niagara River. Julie says that the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory is magical!!

We then crossed into the USA to follow the river south, visiting New York State Parks and historic sites.

Here are two Google maps showing our route along the Niagara River in Canada and the USA, followed by a list of the things we saw:

Along the Niagara River, Ontario, Canada

Along the Niagara River, New York, United States

We hope you enjoy the photos of our journey along the Canada and USA Niagara River as much as we enjoyed taking them. It was a most enjoyable way to spend the last day of our trip.

    Friday, April 30, 2021 - Hershey’s Chocolate World!
This was our first big outing since receiving our COVID-19 vaccinations. The three attractions that we went to were adapted to encourage social distancing, but this was still the first time being around so many people in an inside venue. It actually felt kind of strange. Everyone was required to wear masks in all areas of the Hershey’s Chocolate World building.

It was very appropriate that we started our journey toward Stuart's starting point on the Appalachian Trail at this "sweet" place, since he has often visited Hershey’s Chocolate World as part of his many previous backpacking trips on the A.T. in Pennsylvania. A chocolate treat goes perfectly with backpacking.

    Niagara Falls
When we are in this part of New York, we always love to stop at Niagara Falls. What made this trip special is that we had not been on the Maid of the Mist (@MaidOfTheMist) boat trip in many years. We really enjoyed how close the boat actually gets to the falls -- you are in the midst of the mist!
