To connect the Cleveland Museum of Art community online and to maintain new safety procedures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CMA is hosting the 31st annual Chalk Festival virtually on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13. Participants are encouraged to share their chalk drawings on [Twitter,] Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #CMAChalkFestival.
The CMA’s Virtual Chalk Festival invites everyone to explore the theme of community and express it in a colorful chalk drawing on their sidewalk or driveway. Inspiration may come from socially distanced backyard get-togethers with neighbors, front-porch concerts, tending a community garden, well-known neighborhood architecture or historical landmarks, or a favorite nature spot. Visit the CMA and take in artworks in the galleries for inspiration, peruse the museum’s Collection Online with the examples below, or take a tour on the ArtLens App featuring themes related to community. (ArtLens tours are also accessible off-site through the app.)
In 2019, I wrote that it was a special year, since it was the 30th year of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Chalk Festival. As the coronavirus crisis raged on over the summer of 2020, I wondered if the 31st anniversary of this wonderful event would need to be canceled as we entered September.

On September 1, 2020, I saw the Twitter announcement "Cleveland Museum of Art’s Chalk Festival goes virtual," stating that the event would take place with people sharing their art only on social media on Saturday, September 12, 2020, and Sunday, September 13, 2020.

It is now with mixed feelings that I gather the #CMAChalkFestival drawings for this blog post about the Cleveland Museum of Art's 2020 Virtual Chalk Festival: Love Your Community with All Your Art. While it is very sad that everyone could not get together this year, I am very pleased that the museum encouraged people to share their chalk drawings on social media.

It is very nice that the Cleveland Museum of Art used the #CMAChalkFestival hashtag on social media again this year. I received "likes" on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter from people who saw the photos this past weekend that I shared with the #CMAChalkFestival hashtag from past years' Chalk Festivals.
A big thank-you to @AnnMarieBentl18 who replied on Twitter with the following:
Super cool! & you have my art work & my families art work in here too! Thank you! So sad we couldn't be there this year!— Ann Marie Bentley (@AnnMarieBentl18) September 13, 2020

We enjoyed participating in the @clevelandmuseumofart VIRTUAL chalk festival this year! We may not be the best chalk artists, but we got outside, created art together and had fun. I can't wait to look at all the different chalk drawings people come up with! :) #cmachalkfestival
#cmachalkfestival had to go virtual...had the time to do this last minute with the help of a few 9 year olds that told me I know nothing. Had tons of people stop by to watch and an elderly gentleman threw down snoppy in about 24 seconds. This seriously sucks this got cancelled. One of the best days of the summer. #chalk #chalkart #chalkartist #chalking #chalkitup #sketchbook #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #sketch #sketchbook #murals #muralartist #muralart #cle #clevelandart

We did chalk art today for the #cmachalkfestival. The ship is Luke's, inspired by Winkin, Blinkin and Nod sailing their ship into dreams. Mine is the heron and sunset, and my mom @han810p did the mountain scenery. Such fun playing with chalk. Also a bonus time lapse video I started after I realized how creative Luke was getting. Can't wait to look at all the other art!

This is too massive to be able to get in the frame properly. Continuing the theme for #suicidepreventionmonth, #charlesbukowski has a great quote: “Nobody can save you but yourself and you’re worth saving. It’s a war not easily won but if anything is worth winning then this is it.” In the head illustration it says “you are not alone” with the suicide hotline number below. What fun that the day I publish this blog post, I was reminded by a "Facebook Memory" of good times on September 15, 2019, at the Cleveland Museum of Art Chalk Festival!

With most of the venues that we write about in our sosAssociates.com/Blog currently closed, we have written a "Social Distancing Series" of blog posts. We write to try and capture the activities we are able to do during this time. Once the coronavirus crisis is over, it will be interesting to read these to see the contrast between these times and "normal life."
