"Take a Hike," Cleveland! - 2015 & 2016

We think that the Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation (@GatewayCLE) "Take a Hike" Cleveland tours are the greatest! We recently went on the Warehouse District Tour, in 2015 attended the Gateway District Tour, and have written blog posts in 2014 about the Playhouse Square Tour and Canal Basin Park in the Flats Tour.

Since we did not have time to write a blog post about the tour we did last year, we decided to include our @sos_jr tweets about @GatewayCLE tours from both 2015 and 2016 in this blog post. It is our way to share the experience, and more importantly, to thank the sponsors and partners for these great tours.

Here is the official description of the "Take a Hike" tours, which includes information about awards these tours have won from the State Historic Preservation Office, Ohio History Connection (@OhioHistory), and others:

Take a Hike, presented by Dollar Bank, offers five, free, guided walking tours of five distinct neighborhoods in downtown Cleveland.  Tours explore the Gateway District, Warehouse District, Civic Center, Playhouse Square neighborhood and Canal Basin Park in the Flats.  Each tour lasts approximately one and a half hours in length and features actors and actresses portraying historic figures from Cleveland’s past.  Over 22,200 people have enjoyed “taking a hike” to date. Mind you, “taking a hike” is more like taking a leisurely stroll.

Entertaining and educational, these tours offer visitors and residents alike the opportunity to learn about the history, culture and future plans of each tour area. Geared towards adults, the tours also offer younger audience members the chance to explore Cleveland in a whole new way.

The 2016 Take a Hike season is presented by Dollar Bank.  The program is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.  The tours also receive generous support from Ohio & Erie Canalway and Downtown Cleveland Alliance. 

Program partners included  Historic Warehouse District Development Corporation, PlayhouseSquare, Bob Zimmer, Canalway Partners and  Cleveland Magazine.

In 2015, the Take a Hike program was awarded a Public Education and Awareness Award from the State Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio History Connection.  In 2014, the tours were recognized with a Dominion Community Impact Award, and in 2013, the program was awarded an International Downtown Association Merit Award.

September 14, 2016 - Warehouse District "Take a Hike" Tour

In the Warehouse District, we met actors portraying builder Levi Johnson, and the first billionaire in the world, Cleveland's John D. Rockefeller. In addition to tweets about the tour, we have included tweets about visiting Cleveland's North Coast Harbor (@NCoastHarbor) and Uptown Cleveland (@UptownCle) after the tour.

September 9, 2015 - Gateway District "Take a Hike" Tour

We had saved these tweets to use in a blog post about our 2015 Gateway District tour, but did not get a chance to publish it last year. We are glad to be able to share now how we met Congressional Representative Frances P. Bolton and Cleveland inventor Garrett Morgan (or at least talented actors sharing their stories) during the tour. The following tweets are about the tour and related activities.
