Web Development SIG: So Long, and Thanks for all the Free Web Development Training!

Today, November 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m., the third Saturday of this month, seems like an appropriate day to formally announce that I will not be running the Web Development Special Interest Group (Web Development SIG -- WebSIGCleveland.org) any longer. I chose today to announce this because the Web Development SIG has met on the third Saturday of most months for the last 10 years.

The main purpose of posting this today is to thank the many presenters who have made the Web Development SIG a success. You will see some of their names listed in historical content below. Thank you to those who have made presentations during my tenure -- January 21, 2006 to March 9, 2016 -- and to those who worked with my predecessors. I truly will miss learning from you.

I have been thinking about making this announcement since August 2016. I delayed making the decision to step down from leading the Web Development SIG, since I truly enjoyed this experience. A big part of me is already missing it.

The Web Development SIG has been providing FREE web development training since the late 1990's. It has always been vendor-neutral, providing exposure to a variety of web-related technologies, content development, usability, and accessibility (see historical topics listed below). I believe it is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, SIGs (Special Interests Groups) in Greater Cleveland.

Web Development SIG -- WebSIGCleveland.org 2008 - 2016

Here is the historical content from the WebSIGCleveland.org website for the meetings I ran from September 20, 2008, through July 29, 2016. (Note that since this is old content, many of the links will not work.) WebSIGCleveland.org was hosted within the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group (GCPCUG) website (thank you, Jim Evans @geekclean), where I used the Wild Apricot (WildApricot.com) membership management system to create meeting listings.

FYI, the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group (GCPCUG - @GCPCUG) was founded in 1982, and also ended this year on June 11, 2016. I was on the GCPCUG board of directors from January 2001 through December 2008, as their treasurer and website designer.

Thank you also to the Cleveland Digital Publishing Users Group (CDPUG - @CDPUG) who also gave me administrative access to put Web Development SIG meeting notices on their website.

What follows is the HTML taken directly from the WebSIGCleveland.org website.

Justine Timoteo (@JustineTimoteo) of Insivia (@Insivia), a strategic marketing agency, will present on the return on investment of web analytics.

Analytics is a top priority for organizations, but one that is often ignored or misinterpreted. Knowing what tactics are working, how people are using your site, tracking goals and more, are imperative.

Often, analytics is challenging, with an overwhelming amount of data, new features, and no clear way to understand what the information indicates. Our goal for the event is to provide a foundational level to understand analytics and see tactics for interpretation.

Justine Timoteo is a Marketing Strategist at Insivia, who serves as a high-level advisor and go-to person for strategy and customer happiness. Most of her days are spent developing marketing plans that incorporate content strategy and creation, SEO, demand generation tactics, and marketing automation.

When she’s not developing successful strategies or reading up on the latest marketing trends, she’s off exploring Cleveland or adding stamps in her passport. Connect with Justine on Twitter and LinkedIn.

The Business Model Canvas Suite is rapidly being adapted by businesses and software companies. It is a “living” version of the business plan, but instead of using sentences and paper, one uses “sticky” notes on a wall “canvas.” It visually clarifies what you are doing and why.

So many programmers are “told” what to code. This workshop will broaden your horizon to the process of “why” something needs to be coded. What happens before code is written?

We are going to walk through the first canvas in the suite, creating the Value Proposition Map, which identifies the customer’s needs, pains, and gains, and how well it maps to our (workshop) website. So see how you can validate what, why, and how you should make the website long before you write a line of code.

Sue Marrone (@suem821) facilitates the Business Model Canvas Suite and has done so for many companies large and small, including Prince George Community College, Washington, DC; and the Ohio Department of Transportation, Department of Opportunity, Diversity and Inclusion.

So You Think You Know Podcasting

During this session, Kevin Lockett (@KevinLockett) will discuss how he created his Digital Life with Kevin Lockett podcast and how creating a podcast is not as hard or easy as it seems.

Included in the workshop, you will learn:

  • The Show Process
  • Equipment/Software
  • Distribution
  • Promotion
  • Finding Guests
  • Show Ideas
  • Audio vs. Video
  • Audience Building
  • Branding

Kevin Lockett is a Social Media Strategist based in Akron, Ohio, where he also host and produces "The Digital Life with Kevin Locket” podcast.

Kevin’s career kicked off in 2008 after seeing a presentation about social media at E.J. Thomas Hall.

“I used to have all these ideas in my head, but I didn’t have the tech savvy skills to flesh them out or live in a big city like New York where my content could be published; but after seeing social media pioneer, David Meerman Scott’s lecture, I learned that there were platforms that would allow me to take my media and marketing thoughts and turn them into reality.”

From that forward, Kevin has worked on various digital projects, starting with Lock 3 Park in 2008, The Summit of Sustainability Awards, United Way’s Project Blueprint, The Global Village Festival and former Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic’s last Mayoral campaign.

After attending workshops at the Akron Digital Media Center, Kevin learned how to effectively shoot and edit video, which led the former DJ to launch his audio podcast “The Digital Life Kevin Lockett” (DigitalKev.com) podcast in 2013, where he has interviewed influencers in social media and pop culture including renowned ballerina Misty Copeland, Time Magazine’s Joel Stein, Cali Lewis from Geek Beat Live and Forbes Magazine’s Zack O’Malley Greenburg.

In 2015, Kevin created “Code Akron" (CodeAkron.com), where he introduces urban youth to technology through coding and business. Also this year, Kevin wrote and published first eBook, So You Think You Know Content Marketing which recently hit #3 on Amazon's Best Sellers in Computers & Technology Short Reads list

A pop culture junkie at heart, it is not unusual for Kevin to watch The Walking Dead, Charlie Rose or General Hospital, while researching his next podcast interview or tweeting frantically during the Emmys, The Oscars, MTV Awards as well as The Tonys, while keeping an eye on the Cavs in the finals. #GoCAVS

Though it is often thought that breaches occur through complicated techniques, the vast majority of website breaches and application vulnerabilities are the result of relatively simple attacks on known weaknesses in web application functionality.

In this Introduction to Web Application Vulnerability talk, Tom Pieragastini will discuss some of these vulnerabilities and some simple ways that developers can test their own applications and prevent some of these common vectors of attack from leading to a breach.

Tom Pieragastini has been working in information security professionally for only a short time, but has engaged in years of research on vulnerabilities and security. He has been a participant and security consultant on projects at Cleveland GiveCamp 2015, the Fix216 Hackathon and other events in the Greater Cleveland area.

What Content Management Systems Hath Wrought--A Brief Look at the Revolution in Flexible Online Content

With improvements in content management systems, web copy creators can now easily control the content on their website(s). Content has always been king, but since writers can now more easily place copy on their websites, they now have more responsibility to create high quality content.

At our February 21st meeting, writer, editor, marketing consultant, and writing coach John Ettorre (@WorkinWithWords) will share with us how improvements in content management systems have led to changes in writing workflow. John specializes in developing compelling website content that helps organizations tell their stories online. Since 1996, he has played a central role in developing the message for well over 100 websites, large and small. During that time, he has written web copy for dozens of major brand names, including Travelocity, Wells Fargo, Goodyear, Citizens Bank, GOJO Industries, Sun Trust, Cleveland Clinic, Intercontinental Hotels, and Kay and Jared Jewelers.

Daniel Young (@DanYoungDXY), Founder and Principal Partner of DXY Solutions, LLC (@DXYdoes), will present a case study on a web project for the Akron Public Schools (@AkronSchools). The project for the school system went beyond just a simple website redesign to encompass the development of an online community.

Akron Public Schools' website wasn't working. It was impossible to navigate, tedious to manage, and it obscured the accomplishments and vibrancy of the district, its staff, and most importantly, its students. DXY Solutions took on the redesign project with a fresh approach. Meeting with parents, teachers, and administrators, they researched the needs of Akron Public Schools and what they hoped to achieve.

The result is a site designed to foster conversation between the community and the district; one that allows for parents and students to communicate with their teachers and administrators in a safe, secure, and protected environment. Users are now empowered to create their own content and to start their own conversation. The overwhelming consensus is that the new site will serve as a catalyst in creating a stronger district with increased enrollment going forward.

Daniel Young founded DXY Solutions in 2006. It is now a highly respected boutique firm with offices today in Berlin, Cleveland and Seattle. DXY is a creative technology agency, whose services include business analysis; interaction and product design; and web, mobile and embedded development. Supported by a team of 23 people, including analysts, designers, artists, engineers, and developers, DXY has enjoyed a 1200 percent average growth rate since 2006, winning a number of business and technology awards in the process.

There is a common misconception that User Experience (UX) work will slow Agile down. In this session Carol Smith (@carologic) will dispel this theory by sharing her experiences, and the best practices that she has collected through her own work, as well as through attending training and workshops with advanced UX/Agile practitioners.

This presentation will include discussions of how to successfully imbed the UX team; the pros and cons of Agile projects; and the UX team’s responsibilities with regard to prioritization of work. Methods for working with distributed teams will be briefly discussed when team co-location is not feasible.

Finally, Carol will discuss best practices and several successful ways to integrate usability testing methods across iterations.

Carol Smith is a regular presenter at conferences internationally and has been working on Agile projects since 2009. She has worked in a wide range of industries including: education, healthcare, government, manufacturing and retail.

Search engine optimization has changed significantly, largely because of Google updates called Panda and Penguin – and a whole new writing of the Google algorithm: Hummingbird.

In 2014, the emphasis is on creating remarkable content and promoting it brilliantly on social media channels. Many old school tactics can now hurt your site so what you don’t know can hurt you. Find out more.

We are very fortunate to have Leslie Carruthers (@TheSearchGuru), the President of The Search Guru, Inc., to update us at our March 15, 2014 meeting.

Leslie is a seasoned Internet marketing professional and search engine marketer. Her background includes Internet marketing since 1999 and search engine marketing (SEM) since 2001. Leslie was named one of the top women in SEO for 2012.

2/14/14 UPDATE: Please come early since the lower entrance is closed due to snow. Please read and share with others details here.

Description from: W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)

Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can use the Web. More specifically, Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and that they can contribute to the Web. Web accessibility also benefits others, including older people with changing abilities due to aging.

Web accessibility encompasses all disabilities that affect access to the Web, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and neurological disabilities. The document "How People with Disabilities Use the Web" describes how different disabilities affect Web use and includes scenarios of people with disabilities using the Web.

Tom Babinszki (@TBabinszki), who is an Accessibility Advisor at IBM, will be presenting at our February 15, 2014, meeting.

He was born in Hungary, where he has actively participated in disability advocacy since his teenage years.

After moving to the United States, he worked with government agencies and corporations to help them make web and software accessible to people with disabilities. He trained the first visually impaired accessibility consultants in South-East Asia.

Besides accessibility work, Tom has built a center for entrepreneurship at the Hadley School for the Blind (@TheHadleySchool) to help visually impaired business owners realize their dreams.

After working independent for the past eight years, Jonathan Knapp has seen a few things that went well on projects and quite a few that did not. When things break down, it's almost always due to poor communication.

It doesn't have to be like this.

We'll discuss the mindsets of everyone involved with seeing a project succeed and what tools or techniques can help to fill the communication gap.

Jonathan Knapp is a digital consultant out of Akron, OH. He’s been working for himself for the past eight years at his company Coffee and Code (CoffeeAndCode.com) and has worked on PHP, Flash/Flex, Rails, Django, and JavaScript projects.

He is also a community web advocate running a meetup group in Akron/Canton, supporting local conferences and Give Camps, and helping other developers to get their start. Feel free to hit him up on Twitter: @CoffeeAndCode.

HTML5 Video – Why should I learn this? How does it work today? How might it work in the future?

HTML5 draft specification has introduced the <video> element to play web video natively within supporting browsers, without the need for browser plugins. Lack of agreement between the major browser developers on video file format, and the need for support for older browsers, has hampered HTML5 Video use. Instead of the easy-to-use tag, it currently requires more effort.

At our Saturday, May 18, 2013, meeting, website director Stuart O. Smith, Jr., is going to share with us what he has learned from his HTML5 Video work, plus share some additional resources that he has researched. The following will be covered:

  • When to use HTML5 versus other video options
  • HTML5 Video file types
  • Converting video files
  • HTML5 code
  • Attributes
Stuart O. Smith, Jr., is the Website Director at Notre Dame College (www.NotreDameCollege.edu), and holds a Master of Nonprofit Organizations (MNO) degree from Case Western Reserve University. He has been a co-leader of WebSigCleveland.org since 2006, and on the Cleveland GiveCamp (ClevelandGiveCamp.org) planning committee. The design industry has lost focus on what it means to be a user experience designer. It’s not about writing requirements, drawing wireframes, graphic design, or even user research. It’s about making your users feel great.

While those other skills are important, they are just a means to an end, a way to enable users to accomplish what they need to accomplish.

We conduct user interviews and usability testing to learn directly from our users, but our brains aren’t wired to express how we feel. So, how can we learn from our users' feelings to make our products better?

Please join Josh Walsh (@JoshWalsh) of Designing Interactive (@We_Are_Di) as he presents "Making Our Users Feel Great: The Psychology of Making Things Easy to Use."

Please come join us Saturday, October 20th, to learn about Bootstrap, from Twitter. Bootstrap is an amazing set of tools to help you kick-start your web applications. It is designed to help people of all skill levels -- designer or developer, huge nerd or early beginner. Use it as a complete kit or use it to start something more complex.

It was originally built with only modern browsers in mind, but it has evolved to include support for all major browsers and, with Bootstrap 2, tablets and smart phones. Despite its small footprint, Bootstrap is one of the most complete front-end toolkits out there with dozens of fully functional components ready to be put to use.

In this presentation, we will talk about the origin of Bootstrap, what it is, and where it may be heading. We will take a deep dive into all of the features of this toolkit.

When you leave this presentation, you should have an understanding of what it does and how to get started. Presenter Dan Vega states: "I feel confident that once you see just how awesome Bootstrap is, you may never start another project without it."

Presenter Bio:

Dan Vega (@cfaddict) is a Senior Developer for the REX Development Department at First Comp, and has been developing software for nine years. Dan has a passion for inspiring and educating others. This has led to his being named an Adobe Community Professional for the last two years. He also blogs regularly at www.DanVega.org/blog about his daily findings, and enjoys speaking to those willing to listen.

Dan is also the manager of the Cleveland Adobe User Group Group. As manager, he regularly provides content to the group, answers members' questions, and presents on a wide variety of topics at monthly Cleveland AUG meetings, and has also presented to other user groups.

Web SIG Cleveland - Javascript/Stylesheet UI Toolkits - Why, Which and How?

  • 17 Mar 2012

UI Toolkits vary greatly - from the simple to complex. All of them come bundled with or sit on top of existing core javascript frameworks - jquery, dojo, extjs, YUI, Cappuccino, etc. Some are designed for mobile interactivity, some are designed for full blown web applications, while others are designed to augment and expedite normal website interfaces.

Richard Schulte's presentation will introduce folks to some of the more popular and/or useful of the broad array of UI toolkits that are available. There will be discussion on when and where they are actually useful, how some of them can be customized, and more. Lastly, the way they actually function will be demystified - whether by pre-processing, DOM manipulation, or simple css and DOM selectors. Additionally, we will learn how some of these (mostly mobile UI toolkits) actually use HTML5.

Richard Schulte (rschulte.com; @rerooting) is a Co-founder of the local tech worker co-op Flywheel Tech Collective (@flywheeltech), Richard has spent years performing frontend development roles on projects in drupal, wordpress, sencha touch, and with custom built applications in CommonJS and Rails. Specifically concerning ui toolkits, he has worked with bootstrap, jquery ui, jquery mobile, kendo ui, extjs4/sencha touch, and dojo. When he's not messing with stylesheets, doing product development or project management, he's probably building websites for local movement activists, drinking beer, debating cultural theory and economics or making delicious food.

It's no surprise to anyone that mobile devices are the leaders in the growth of consumer electronics. Is your website prepared? How does your website look on an iPhone, Android phone, or BlackBerry? What about on the iPad, netbook, or Kindle?

While mobile devices are growing in popularity, we are also seeing desktop computers with larger and larger screens. The W3Schools website reports that in January 2011, 85% of visitors to their website were using a screen resolution higher than 1024x768 pixels. How does your website look to those visitors with increasingly larger monitors?

At the January 21st Web SIG Cleveland meeting, we will look at a method to address the needs of these design extremes with responsive web design. Web designer Eric Browning will explore with us how to use CSS to create flexible grids, layouts, and images, and use media queries to be responsive to the varied needs of website visitors. The goal will be to explore a new web development paradigm and develop a new workflow that will better address today's web visitors' needs.

Eric Browning is a designer living and working just outside Akron, Ohio. He has worked for several interactive agencies and production houses, doing design and front end development, as well as freelance projects. He's now the Art Director at Blue Frog Gaming, a gaming startup, trying to create something fun and meaningful. He stays active in the local web and design communities, including leadership roles in the Akron Canton web group. When not thinking about design and media, he's usually spending time with his wife and hiking with their crazy dog, Pica. He has a small personal site at www.fiveoclockfriday.comand you can reach him on Twitter at @browningeric as well.

There are free tools available to help even the most novice person interested, and almost everyone has a friend, neighbor, or knows a college student who would be willing to take on the job. But what separates good sites, or even great sites, from exceptional ones? Is it the talent of the individuals doing the work? Is it based on how much you’re willing to invest? Well, part of that is true, but the real secret stems from the design process itself.

At this event, Marc Majers (Twitter: @DontFearForward) will be talking about his new book "Don't Fear The Forward: The Secret to Building Successful Websites" and answering your questions. Whether you are in the process of building, redesigning or optimizing your website this lecture is for you!

The Model View Controller (MVC) pattern of web architecture is a different way of building pages from the traditional one-page, one-URL architecture. The Model-View-Controller pattern can offer significant benefits to the developer but also requires a different way of thinking. At our September 17 meeting, Bill Kiraly (www.cohenkiraly.com) will give an intro to MVC that should be important information for both Developers who may want to use it and for web designers who need to understand the pattern to design their HTML and styling to work with an MVC site.

With the MVC pattern, the developer creates three distinct parts of an application: the Model which abstracts the data you are manipulating, the view which provides the presentation to the user and the controller which accepts, understands and responds to user actions and contains the logic of how the models and views interact with each other and the user.

MVC has several potential advantages over traditional web architecture. Among them are:

  • It is able to completely implement test driven design so you build your site to meet requirements and can more easily and reliably perform maintenance and changes.

  • Some aspects of MVC make site and application development faster, easier and more reliable. It enforces separations of concerns, again making your application easier to understand, to build and to maintain. You can completely reskin a site without changing the model or view, you can completely change your backend functionality without touching your user interface.

  • It is a more truely object-orient development pattern. MVC is not specific to any language or platform but Bill will be demonstrating in ASP.Net

  • Created properly, it can provide major URL improvements for both SEO and for usability. MVC can offer site performance improvements over traditional patterns.

"Web development that doesn't hurt." Ruby on Rails is an open-source web framework that's optimized for programmer happiness and sustainable productivity." http://rubyonrails.org/

Which ORM (Object-relational mapping) library should I use? What should I use for my template language? Should I use MVC (Model/View/Controller) or some other pattern? What unit testing framework should I use? What database engine should I use?

Unfortunately, these questions make it difficult to start web projects. Therefore, Ruby on Rails has made all of these decisions already; you can just get started. And it's extensible enough that if one of the default choices doesn't work for you, just choose a different library. How does Ruby on Rails answer these questions? How does it use the Ruby language to help make your development even faster? Come and find out!

MySQL has become the world's most popular open source database because of its consistent fast performance, high reliability and ease of use. It's used on every continent (yes, even Antarctica!) by individual Web developers as well as many of the world's largest and fastest-growing organizations to save time and money powering their high-volume Web sites, business-critical systems and packaged software.

In this session, we will begin with an overview of MySQL and discuss the features and functionality that compel organizations, including industry leaders such as Yahoo!, Facebook, Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Zappos.com, to adopt MySQL. In addition, we'll cover what you need to start implementing MySQL, including installation, management and support.

Web Development SIG -- WebSIGCleveland.org 2002 - 2009

Here is the historical content from the WebSIGCleveland.org website from July 20, 2002, through April 18, 2009. (Note that since this is old content, many of the links will not work.) I started running the meetings with my co-chair, Frank Mitch, on January 21, 2006. Thank you Frank for managing the email list, Facebook page, and providing support and feedback.

The PHP website being used at the time was a content management system I built for the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group (GCPCUG) when I was on their board. It was a fun project to build from scratch.

What follows is the HTML taken directly from the WebSIGCleveland.org website.

  • Mashups &
    Easy Ways to Make Flash

    Saturday, 6/21/2008

    Mashups

What’s a Mashup? From Wikipedia “ In technology, a mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into a single integrated tool; an example is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real-estate data, thereby creating a new and distinct web service that was not originally provided by either source. Mashup originally referred to the practice in pop music (notably hip-hop) of producing a new song by mixing two or more existing pieces.”

We will look at a couple mashups that others have built using Google Maps. Then we will look at Microsoft’s Popfly http://www.popfly.com/ which is a web based tool for creating your own mashups.

    Easy Ways to Make Flash

Until recently, it was very complicated to make Flash files. Not anymore. We will look at Sprout http://sproutbuilder.com/ and iSpring http://www.ispringsolutions.com/ where almost anyone can make Flash files.

Sprout is a free web based tool for making Flash files. We will show how you can combine a variety of content into a flash widget that you can post and share with others. We will talk about a key feature of Sprout, which is viral marketing.

You can convert your PowerPoint presentations into Flash files for posting on the web. iSpring Pro 3 from iSpring lets you convert your PPT files and enchance them.

Group member Jim Evans will be making the presentation on Mashups and Flash Creation.

Kevin Reilly is the Director of Project Management for DeVore Technologies. DeVore is an IT training and development company that has grown to serve most of the largest companies in NE Ohio over the last 12+ years.
As was once wisely stated that "necessity is the mother of invention". This sentiment sums up the genesis of the eNewsPress 3.0 (eNP3). A few years ago a large client asked if DeVore could provide an internal email communications system that would allow division leaders to format and distribute technical information throughout the organization. The system needed to be efficient, and allow for content editing and archival of the "newsletters" on the company Intranet. Non-technical users needed the ability to create the HTML-based communications without coding knowledge through the use of their web browsers.
DeVore delivered the product (version 1.0) to the client in the year 2K. Since that rendition, the system was upgraded to include more dynamic functionality (V2.0). The system was subsequently rolled out to more clients for use as an external communications and marketing tool.
In 2002, we put the system through a comprehensive review, and decided to increase its functionality as a broad-based marketing tool. Version 3.0 was created. It included a new GUI, as well as proprietary mail handling technology that boasts a 95%+ delivery success rate. Due to it's opt-in format, eNP3 client's experience a lower than standard unsubscribe rate.
More information on the eNP3 system can be found at http://www.enewspress.com.
